It’s human nature to get scared when there is change in the way we work. Be it the first day of school, first day in a new job, even when you get married, thereโ€™s always fear about how things will turn out in this new environment.

So this fear comes when you are willing to do something which you wanted to do. Now let’s think what if we are forced to change. Now there will be more frustration than fear as change is imposed on us and we are not in control.

My solution might sound philosophical but I feel it’s pragmatic. When in such a situation , think about your past experience of a similar situation and how you dealt with it. You will realise it was just your internal fear, nothing else.

If you are a person who is enforcing change on others then itโ€™s your responsibility to make people believe in the new system by sharing your point of view.

In my current organisation we have implemented complete deployment automation. As a part of it there was a process change on how developers need to provide changelog. As this was a change in the way they used to things.

I got a lot of resistance from them. So there were problems in the new system plus due to the new process their time to provide changelog increased. People who built it also got doubts in the system. And after seeing all this chaos, for a second I also doubted the new system.

But then I reminded myself of the purpose of this system and this was expected as nothing is perfect.ย When I explained to them to wait for atleast 2 weeks to get its benefit and assurance that the system will improve eventually based on feedback, there was calm in people including people who built it. To do this I first listened to all of their problems and then promised to solve most critical problems ASAP.

This is an early post as we are yet to cross the two weeks mark. Once it’s done I will share honest feedback of developers even if it’s negative and what we did to gain the confidence of people back.

When you are bringing new change, help team understand the change from your perspective.
